The omnipresence of God |

The Emperor said to R. Gamaliel: "You Jews say that where ten of you are assembled together, God is among you. How many gods there must be in the world if a god is present with every ten persons?" R. Gamaliel replied, "It is quite true; wherever ten of our people are assembled, God is among them, and yet there is no more than one God in the universe. I will prove it to you, and you will have to acknowledge it." R. Gamaliel thereupon called one of the servants of the king, and when the servant came in, he struck him on the nape of the neck so that he fell down. The servant said, "Why did you strike me?" R. Gamaliel replied: "Because you allow the sun to shine into the king's palace." And the Emperor replied: "Why, the sun shines all over the world." Then R. Gamaliel said: "Consider this: the sun is only one of God's servants and yet it is all over the world. How much more so God who is Lord of the universe and the Creator of heaven and earth! Surely He is all over the world and with everyone." The Emperor was silenced, and said: "You answered correctly, and you are right." |
