The Emperor said to R. Gamaliel: "You Jews maintain that the dead will come to life again, but they are only earth, and how can earth come to life?" Thereupon the daughter of the Emperor said to R. Gamaliel: "Do you be quiet, and I will answer my father." Then the daughter said to the Emperor: "Father dear, I want to ask you something. We have here in this town two potters, one makes his vessels out of water and one makes them out of clay. Which of the two is the greater master?" And the Emperor said: "What a question? Surely he who can make pots out of water is the greater workman." Than she replied: "Father dear, do you not think that he who can make pots out of water can make them still more easily out of clay?" And the Emperor replied: "I certainly think that he will make them much more easily out of clay than out of water." Then the daughter said: "Father dear, remember that God made man originally out of earth, which is like water, as it is easily dissolved In water. How much more easily can God remake him out of earth when he has been turn into earth?" And the Emperor agreed with her. |
