R. Johanan said: "The feet of a man stand surety for him, for they carry him to the spot where he is destined to die." There were once two men from the land of Cush, one of whom was called Elihoreph and the other Ahija son of Shisha. They were both scribes of King Solomon and he loved them very much, One day King Solomon saw the angel of death looking very sad. So he asked him: "Why are you so sad?" The .angel of death replied: "It is because I am asked to take the souls of these two scribes of yours, and I cannot do any harm to them here, for they are not destined to die in this place." When King Solomon heard this, he handed them over to a demon who was to take them safely to Luz, for Luz is a place where the people do not die. But when the demon brought the two men under the gate of Luz, the angel of death was there waiting for them, and he killed them there. The next morning King Solomon saw the angel of death and he was merry. The king asked him: "Why are you so merry?" And he replied: "Because you sent me the men to the very spot where it was destined that they should die," Then King Solomon said: "I see how true it is that the feet of a man stand surety for him to carry him to the place where he is to die." The old Hillel said: "My feet carry me to the place where I like to go." He meant to say, that the feet carry one to the place where he is destined to die. |
