Rule not thy household with fear |
the story name |
|
R. Abahu said: "A man should not cause his household to be afraid of him, for many sins are caused thereby." Once upon a time the cook of R. Hananiah, son of Gamaliel, had lost the leg of an ox, and she was so much afraid of her master's anger when he should hear of it, that she went to the stall, cut off the leg of a living cow, cooked it and gave it to him to eat. But R. Hananiah, who was a very pious man, had a premonition that something was wrong before he had eaten it, and thus escaped committing a sin. And this is a lesson that a man should not terrify the people in his house, for it may lead to sin, as you have just read in this story. |
