The miracle of R. Judah |
the story name |
|
The wife of R. Judah went to market and bought wool, which she spun and made a mantle thereof. Whenever she went to market she put on the mantle, and whenever R. Judah wanted to say his prayers, he also wrapped himself in the same mantle. Whenever he put it on, he said the following blessing: "Blessed art Thou O God, who causest me to be wrapped in a mantle," for they loved that mantle very much, having nothing else to put on. One day Rabbi Simeon, son of Gamaliel, who was head of the college, ordered a public fast. R. Judah did not come to the service. The other rabbis noticed it and said: "R. Judah is not here." Then they said: "He has no mantle to put on." Thereupon R. Simeon sent him a mantle, but he refused to accept it. But he took up the rug upon which he was sitting, and said to the man who brought the mantle: "See how much money I have here!" By a miracle there was actually a large quantity of money under it. He said, however, that he was not pleased with it. |
