Why it is forbidden to eat vegetables before untying the bunch |
the story name |
|
Abbaye said: "I used to think that a man who eats from a parcel of vegetables tied up by the gardeners is considered to be a glutton and a drunkard, for he has no patience to wait until the bundle is loosened. (The gardeners are accustomed to tie together in one parcel onions, garlic and radishes.) But I was told afterwards that the reason is that such bundles can be used for witchcraft against anyone who is not forewarned. Therefore one should be careful to loosen the onions or the garlic or the radishes before he eats of them, for then no evil can happen to him." |
