Once upon a time there lived a Jewish butcher in Sepphoris who used to sell forbidden meat to the Jews in lieu of proper kasher meat. Once on the eve of the Sabbath he became dead drunk and, going up to the roof of the house, fell down and broke his neck and died, and the dogs came and licked his blood. Then the people came to R. Hanina and asked him whether they should bury him or not, for the dogs were licking his blood. R. Hanina replied, "In our Holy Torah it is written: 'Ye shall not eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs' (Ex. 22.30). Now this butcher has deprived the dogs of their due, for he sold to Jews the defiled (terefah) meat which belonged to the dogs. Now the dogs have come and are eating their share of the butcher. Leave the wicked man, therefore, where he is, and bury him not. Let the dogs eat his flesh which he took from them." |
