Rab Huna and his four hundred casks of wine |
the story name |
|
R. Huna had four hundred vats of wine, and they all turned into vinegar. Then came to him Rab Ada, the nephew of Sala the Pious, and other sages. They said to R. Huna, "Examine your deeds and see whether you have committed any wrong, for no doubt the Lord is punishing you in this world so that you may not lose any of the reward in the world to come." R. Huna replied, "My dear friends, do you suspect me of having done anything wrong?" And they said, "Dear Master, do you believe that the Lord inflicts evil on His pious ones without cause?" Then R. Huna replied, "If there is anyone amongst you who knows anything against me, let him say it." Then they said, "We have been told that you have not paid the gardeners their wages." Then R. Huna said, "That would be stealing, but I am not guilty. I am ready to take an oath that I have paid them their wages." Some say the vinegar turned back again into wine; others say that it remained vinegar, but the price of vinegar rose so high that it was sold at the price of wine. |
