R. Samuel the Pious Sees the Heaven Opening |
the story name |
|
One day R. Samuel the Pious walked across the fields in the company of two other men. Suddenly he saw the heaven opening, whereupon he said to his companions: "I see that the heaven is open. This is a good opportunity. If you prefer a petition to God at this moment, it will be granted." Accordingly all the three made their requests. One asked for handsome children; the other asked for wealth; while the pious man himself asked God to give him children (for he had not had any) who would be learned in the Torah. All their requests were granted, and when the pious man came home, his wife conceived and bore a son named R. Abraham. Later she gave birth to Rabbi Judah the Pious. May the Lord permit us to participate in his merit. Amen. Selah. |
