Piety and modesty |
the story name |
|
There was a man whose wife had no finger on her hand, but he had not noticed it until she died. Rabbi Joseph said, "What a modest woman she must have been if her husband did not notice in her lifetime the absence of her finger." Rabbi Hiyya then said to Rabbi Joseph, "Nay, this is no sign that the woman was specially modest, for every woman would take care to cover herself, much more so this one, but what great piety must the man have possessed if during her lifetime he never noticed anything of the sort." |
