The poor widower who suckled his infant with his own breasts |
the story name |
|
Once upon a time a man lost his wife, who left behind her a suckling baby. The man was so poor that he could not afford to hire a nurse for the child. But a miracle happened to him, and his breasts grew so large that he was able to feed his child like a nurse. Concerning this Rabbi Joseph said, "Come and see what a good man he must have been that the Lord, blessed be He, should have performed such a miracle for him." Abbaye said, "What a bad man he must have been that for his sake the order of creation had to be changed." Rabbi Judah said, "Come and see how many difficult tasks God must perform for man before He provides his food for him, seeing that God changed the order of creation for his sake and made it possible for him to suckle the child. For the Lord could have created food for the baby, and yet He performed a miracle so that the man himself could feed the child." For we find that God performs many miracles for the protection of man but does not create his food for him. For we do not find that the Lord, blessed be He, creates corn in the houses of the pious. |
